RESUMO:

From the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, the first urban plans of modernization were implemented, modifying the patterns of sanitary, street and aesthetic in the cities. The demolitions of old houses, urban mesh, landmarks and symbols were intended to promote the perception that a new city was being built. During these large transformations, voices emerge in defense of the old erased references of daily life (or under the risk). How the speaks were verbalized? In what ways do they circulate? What are its repercussions? Starting from an international context of modernization and interpretation of past. The thesis focuses on the implantation of urban projects in Brazilian cities during the first. With the main objective of investigating the representations about the architecture of the past from cases of demolitions, from 1900 to 1930, contributing to illuminate the construction of the notion of tradition, as a value, which was therefore essential to modify sensitivity in favor of safeguard urban elements. The research brings together documents from diverse sources, until now separated and little explored, to tell the cultural history of some of the destructive actions, using them as a methodological strategy to evidence their forces. Between placements, sensations, ideas, conflicts and actions that resulted from the cases studied. Thus, the empirical object of urban reforms is related to the debates in the technical, intellectual and informative environment. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a multiplicity of readings was presented around definitions of national architecture, tradition and the expression of time. These records intersect with the local discussions, in Salvador and Recife, what constitute the spatial clipping of the thesis. As cities with expressive legacies of the colonial period, after significant losses for the implantation of improvement projects, they presented in the late 1920s first tries attempts to recognize and preserve examples of the past. Official government documents (as reports, contracts and projects) and the large mass of news press help identify agents involved in the processes, disputes, as well as the agreements made and the procedures adopted in the demolition actions. It is also observed how some of the losses come to be used in denunciations of intellectuals about contempt/destruction of objects and buildings that should be recognized as relics of the Nation. The theme has been subject of debates in the state scene, as shown the sources by media, cultural entities (museums and Monuments Agency), religious institutions and communications of intellectuals and politicians. The thesis under development thus contributes to the understanding of the historical process of recognizing the value of colonial examples as representative of the national identity, highlighting the local view that served as reference to the construction of federal heritage policy, founded in Brazil at 1937.
