RESUMO:

Space production is a process which has as basis the physical-territorial structure and which results from the action of several social agents in different scopes. During the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries, Natal was being modernized. Besides the articulation with Rio Grande do Norte’s hinterland, by rail and roads networks, the intraurban ambitus was passing through significative intervention. Many technical networks were being consolidated in the urban structure, such as electricity, water, sanitation and urban transport, like the tram lines. The town also amplified its urban layout – and, thus, its offer of urban land – by the creation of intervention plans, opening of new streets and squares and urban limits redefinition. This modernization process revealed also the part played by different political and economical agents as definers of urban legislation in Natal during the Old Republic period (1889-1930). These individuals, or group of individuals, acted through the leasing of great urban fractions in the potiguar capital. Therefore, taking this context as basis, the following question has come across: in which way the disposition of the routes and structural improvements in urban transport and street pavements is related to the land possesion process in Natal during the first three decades of 20th century? Our hypothesis is that these systems have contributed to a urban structure differentiated espatial and socially and decurrent of the action of some social agents which had relations among themselves, fact that intervened directly in the selective infrastructure distribution. This way, the relation between road and transport urban networks and the real estate structure is our study object. The main objetive is to comprehend the role of urban structure in the production process of intraurban space in Natal. Thus, it is aimed the contribution to the study of strategies used by several agents, as well, broadening the understanding of the “network” concept in the country historiography. Some specific objetives are necessary to back the main one: 1) Identify the social agents involved in the construction of these networks and understand the way they acted, especially, the State; 2) Understand the relation between the urban legislation and the town’s layout; and 3) Comprehend the dynamics between land legal possesion and road infrastructure distribution. The primary resources used – besides the bibliographical research – were the leasing documents of land from the Natal City Hall (1903-1930), Reports from the Ministry of Roads and Public Works, Messages from the State Government and Reports and Resolutions from the Municipal Intendency. The period focuses in which has been classically defined by national historiography as Old Republic (1889-1930). This delimitation is supported by two main reasons. First, it is when the networks related are implanted in Natal. Second, because corresponds to the period when some oligarchies were ruling the State and the City. These oligarchies were directly related to the introduction of urban networks in Natal and would be removed from the government during the 1930’s Revolution.
