Technologies that make up the so-called “information revolution” that has taken course over the last few decades allow for virtually instant global communication, changing social and spatial relations and creating new paths to the comprehension of contemporary urban society.

Computer-based data analysis and projection tools have not, however, been fully incorporated into the education of future architects and urban planners. This study seeks to comprehend the mechanics surrounding the insertion of computer tools in urban planning and design, so as to guide the construction of methodological applications aided by such tools in the teaching of this subject matter. To that end, we observe the usage of tools pertaining to Geographic Information Systems (GIS); three-dimensional urban modeling (through remote sensing; procedural modeling and parametric modeling); urban data visualization (in GIS platforms, virtual reality and augmented reality); and urban simulation systems – all of which have achieved a considerable level of visibility in urban planning and design practices and research. We intend to construct and present an instrument directed at the planning of activities that integrate computer tools in the teaching of urban and regional planning and design. In order to test the proposed instrument, we tried this methodological approach in an experiment that inserted procedural modeling techniques at the end of a semester-long standard studio activity in the Architecture and Urbanism course, in Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN/Brazil). This activity was assessed based on surveys handed out to participants and organizers, and the discussion of results with the involved teachers. The execution of one other such experiment is planned, to be followed by a general assessment of results and of the proposed methods. We understand that the main follow-up to this study will be, beyond introducing new tools into the Architecture and Urbanism course in UFRN, to create an instrument that can be permanently updated with data that guide the preparation of urban and regional planning and design.
