RESUMO:

The Social Housing subject is broad and multidisciplinary, although it has its own specificities. It has been present in Brazilian reality since the 1930s, although it has a later insertion in the Architecture and Urbanism schools (in the 1980s the first housing laboratories appeared and today there is a course focused on the theme - UFMG nighttime). But how are the Social Housing Design issues currently being addressed in the design workshops of Brazilian Architecture and Urbanism courses? And also, what guidelines should conduct design teaching in this area?

Based on these questions, this thesis general objective is to propose guidelines for Social Housing design teaching in Brazilian Architecture and Urbanism courses (AUCs), in order to incorporate to these disciplines the multidisciplinarity and the specificities of this topic at the present time. The specific objectives are: (1) to delineate a historical picture on the Social Housing design teaching in Brazil; (2) to identify Architecture and Urbanism courses that indicate focusing on the Social Housing theme in design teaching subjects (through their Political Pedagogical Project or discipline plans); (3) to construct the state of art of Social Husing design teaching in Brazil, indicating how the subject is approached in Architecture and Urbanism undergraduate courses; and (4) to perform a detailed study of the theoretical and methodological practices adopted in disciplines that focus on Social Housing on at least three of theses AUCs in order to identify and categorize the main teaching strategies adopted (didactic procedures and resources). Thereunto, the empirical research was divided in three stages. Stage 1: identification the AUCs that focus on te Social Housing theme in design teaching – a search at the institutions' websites is currently underway to access the necessary documents. Stage 2: construction of a panoramic view of Social Housing teaching in Brazil, pointing how the subject is  approached by the AUCs. It will be possible dus the analysis of documents and data obtained in the previous stage and research with teachers (online questionnaires). Step 3: direct study in three courses (minimum) to investigate theoretical-methodological practices and teaching strategies, through classes observation, conducting interviews and/ or applying questionnaires with teachers. After each step, the obtained data will be systematized and analyzed based on the literature, so that, in the end, the joint analysis of the collected material will allow the drawing up of guidelines that may support methodological strategies elaboration for the teaching Social Housing in brazilian Atchitecture and Urbanism undesgraduation.
