RESUMO:

This study is developed from a starting question: How can the understanding of the urban space by people who do not have the sense of vision contribute to the planning of a more suitable city for all people? As preliminary answers to this question, we infer two hypotheses: (i) understanding the urban experience of the blind people will allow the recognition of identifiable urban elements through different senses of sight (hearing, smelling, touching, tasting, thermal and kinesthetic) and that are essential for urban use and guidance; (Ii) spaces that offer conditions to be perceived in a multisensory way are more accessible to all. Through  a paradigm of spatial analysis,  based on the human being and the person-environment relationship, the intended research has dealt with the perception of blind people during their movement around the city, characterized  on the concepts of urban ambience, environmental experience, affordance, wayfinding, guiding and mobility, developed in the theoretical conceptual framework (item 2 of this project). The main aim of the empirical work is to investigate the resources (perceptual and cognitive) used by the blind people during their locomotion in the urban environment, in order to  propose  architectural and urban alternatives that favor the accessibility and participation of all the people in the life of the city . Multisensory strategies will be discussed to increase the orientation of people in the urban environment from the bibliographic study and through an empirical work carried out in two stages: (a) checking the type of information provided to the blind ones in their Guiding and Mobility training, (b) surveying the  blind people who present conditions for autonomous mobility in the city, aiming to understand the resources used daily by them in this process;  a stage that corresponds to a planned experiment that will take place in Natal/RN, including commented path, individual interviews, design-story and focal group, which will support the making of sensorial maps of an urban area. We understand that the analysis of blind body movement in space, structured in perception, cognition and memory as a form of recognition and identification of the environment, will allow the definition of multisensorial subsidies for an architectural design that prioritizes spatial inclusion, since the production of spaces welcoming people who are blind will at the same time, contribute to raising environmental quality for all people.
