RESUMO:

In the contemporary university education, the learning experience requires a continuous constructive process it was supposed to be a result of a qualitative development in which the learning is acquired not only through the accumulation of knowledge but also throughout dynamic researches and activities combined with an integrated education manner. This thesis has as initial query the contestation that a significant proportion of the students are entering in an Architectural Design and Urbanism courses in general and particularly in the UFRN struggling with spatial perception skills, a fact that has been obstructing the learning process in architectural design projects. This problem should be worked over in an interdisciplinary way joining the representation and the language studies of an architectural project, however, the actual fragmentation of the curricular contents affects this integration, particularly in regard of the descriptive geometry ant the initial project design subjects. Thus, for the optimization of the teaching/learning, it is argued that this issue should be discussed in an integrated manner, associating the teaching of geometry with project designing, and utilizing methods/techniques consistent with contemporary advances in the area. In order to find ways that would facilitate the development of the formal and spatial perceptions of the students, the object of study of this thesis is the potential of the usage of geometry, and more precisely, of the folding techniques, as an aiding tool to spatial perception and formal conception on projects designing for students entering the school of architecture and urbanism. Ask if: How applied geometry influences the comprehension of the spatiality and the formal conception? How to use it to provide the interdisciplinary content on the curriculum components in the fields of language, representation and project designing on the first year of the Architectural Design and Urbanism course? The hypothesis is that, being the fold one of the tools of the applied geometry able to provide the spatial perception and formal conception on the projective activities of the students, the appliance of exercises based on the folding techniques to students of the first year of the Architecture School, will improve their performances in architectural project designing subjects. The overall objective is to demonstrate the potential contribution that the usage of folding techniques as support for projective activities for the freshmen year on the School of Architectural Design and Urbanism of UFRN. To support this goal, four specific objectives were established: 1. Verify the effectiveness of the usage of folding techniques on the development of the spatial perception; 2. Verify the effectiveness of the usage of folding techniques on the development of the formal conception of architectural objects; 3. Examine the relation between the spatial perception and the formal conception of the architectural projects; 4. Establish guidelines for the improvement of education in this field that can support the creation or reformulation of curriculum components appertaining. The following methodological procedures were used: application of the techniques Paper Folding, an instrument that’s uses folds made in a square paper that is perforated; Surface Development, a technique that is based on imagination and/or viewing a folding from the planning of an object; Origami, a folding technique that would optimize the process of teaching/learning, through the manipulation of paper, and Tessellation, fold creating repeating patterns that can be used in formal conception. These techniques have been explored in four workshops, with exercises applied to leverage the skills on spatial perception, formal conception and creativity of first-year students. It presents five chapters (volume 1) for the qualification/pre-defense, in which there are the search results and directions for the last chapter, plus appendices and attachments (volume 2).
