RESUMO:

Studies in developed and developing countries have confirmed the greater vulnerability of the elderly to heat, particularly, those who have low purchasing power and are unable to afford air conditioning and quality housing. In Brazil, research on the parameters of thermal comfort for the Nordeste region have focused on hot-humid climate regions (coastal climate) and on the young population. On the other hand, studies on thermal comfort for the elderly in semiarid climate areas are scarce. Owing to the bigger ranges of temperature in such regions, planning and construction of houses with suitable thermal standards are inadequate, on the whole. They are worse in the poorest areas and among the most vulnerable people. Although cold weather can help to trigger respiratory and circulatory diseases, it is believed that hot, low humidity days may be even more harmful to the health and well-being of elderly people. Based on the hypothesis just outlined, the purpose of this research is to define the parameters of thermal comfort for elderly people in home environment, through the study of psychophysiological and microclimatic variables, in order to prevent harm to the individual's health and well-being during extreme climatic events, in the specific case of the city of Campina Grande, in the Nordeste state of Paraíba. The method, of qualitative and quantitative nature, is the hypothetical-deductive, which results from the experiments of association (data collection on site – psychophysiological and microclimatic approaches) and the data analysis through inferential statistical techniques (hypothesis test of correlation). Data collection was carried out through several methods and techniques: structured interviewing, behavioural observation of person-environment fit, and measurement of climatic variables with research instruments. The findings of this research should contribute to enhancing the thermal comfort of elderly people in their home environment, through the following end products: (a) Comparative table of predictive models; (b) Parameters of thermal comfort for the elderly population in the city of Campina Grande; and (c) Application of the thermal parameters in post-occupancy evaluation of long stay institutions for the elderly.
