SUMMARY:

This master’s dissertation investigates how 12th-grade students at a state public school located in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, establish connections between the topic of essential oils and the concepts of isomerism during the implementation of a teaching proposal grounded in Project-Based Pedagogy. The study is situated within the context of the historical challenges of Chemistry teaching in Brazilian Basic Education, which has been characterized by the predominance of traditional and rote-learning approaches, resulting in the abstraction of fundamental concepts and low proficiency levels reflected in national and international assessments (PISA and ENEM). Methodologically characterized as action research from a teacher-researcher perspective, the proposal uses essential oils as its guiding theme, given their strong sensory appeal and relevance to students’ everyday lives, integrating molecular analyses, hands-on extraction activities, and the construction of three-dimensional models. In alignment with the guidelines of the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (LDB), the study seeks to overcome the fragmentation of knowledge, foster the learning of chemical concepts at the submicroscopic level, and contribute to students’ holistic development as autonomous and engaged citizens. The initial results obtained throughout the five stages of the intervention indicate that the proposed approach was effective in promoting the learning of the concepts addressed, as well as student engagement and active participation in practical activities and in the presentation and sharing of the products developed.
