Teaching Oxidation Reactions within an Environmental Context

Teaching the topic of redox reactions is often perceived as abstract due to the need to link the macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic levels of chemical transformations, as well as the prevalence of approaches centered on memorizing rules regarding oxidation numbers and equation balancing. These factors contribute to difficulties in understanding electron transfer, identifying oxidizing and reducing agents, and conceptually interpreting chemical reactions. Given this context, this study aims to investigate the contributions of a didactic sequence for teaching redox reactions—grounded in the "Three Pedagogical Moments" framework and contextualized by the issue of nitrate contamination in the groundwater of the Dunas/Barreiras Aquifer in the North Zone of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. This is a qualitative study, characterized as a pedagogical intervention, to be conducted at a public high school in Rio Grande do Norte with second-year high school students. Data collection will involve the use of questionnaires containing both open-ended and closed-ended questions, aimed at identifying prior knowledge, alternative conceptions, and potential conceptual gains following the intervention. The data will be analyzed using Bardin’s content analysis method.
