SUMMARY:

Humanistic approaches in Chemistry education consider sociocultural, philosophical, and historical aspects as essential foundations for fostering the construction of more meaningful and authentic understandings of chemical science. The topic of dietary supplements, situated within a context of consumption driven by media-driven immediacy, proves to be relevant for promoting critical reflections on self-medication practices among high school students. This study aims to analyze a didactic-pedagogical experience focused on the topic of dietary supplements, with an emphasis on the social and critical-reflective aspects of Chemistry, aiming at the development of an educational product for Basic Education. The methodology involved the application of a diagnostic questionnaire to identify students’ prior knowledge and outline their supplement consumption profile, followed by the implementation of a didactic sequence. The initial data, analyzed through Discursive Textual Analysis, reveal that participants recognize supplements as sources of nutrients or dietary complements, in line with official definitions. However, despite associating these products with health and physical performance, many students do not correctly distinguish between nutrients, proteins, and vitamins, demonstrating a lack of knowledge about their chemical composition. Students were critical of the labeling and advertising of supplements, emphasizing the importance of these materials presenting the risks and benefits, chemical composition, and usage guidelines to consumers. Furthermore, the units of meaning associated with the consequences of using artificial intelligence in recommending supplement kits reported negative effects such as the risk of overdoses due to lack of professional supervision, generic recommendations, and cybersecurity insecurity. The educational product developed stimulated student communication in favor of the conscious use of dietary supplements, the mobilization of meanings linked to chemical equilibrium and its effects on blood pH shifts and can also be used as supplementary material by basic education teachers.
