Formative Assessment in Chemistry Education: Development, Implementation, and Analysis of Electrochemistry Evaluation Activities
Keywords: learning assessment; formative assessment; chemistry teaching; electrochemistry.
The present research aims to investigate and promote the integration of formative assessment into the teaching and learning process of Chemistry and Electrochemistry. To this end, the theoretical principles of learning assessment are initially explored, emphasizing formative assessment and highlighting its benefits and practical applications specific to the educational context in question. Next, the current assessment practices used by Chemistry teachers are analyzed, identifying their limitations and opportunities for improvement. Based on this information, a set of formative assessment activities adapted to the teaching of Electrochemistry is developed. These activities are designed not only to diagnose the knowledge and skills acquired by the students but also to promote their active involvement in the process of constructing their own learning. The research progresses with the application of formative assessment activities in a real educational environment during Electrochemistry classes. This phase of the research includes data collection on the impact of the activities on students' performance and their acceptance of the formative method. The analysis of the effectiveness of the strategies used in the research was conducted through a qualitative approach, by surveying students' opinions and based on the results obtained from the evaluative activities carried out during the Electrochemistry classes, observing the established educational objectives. The implementation of these activities in a real educational environment revealed promising results, demonstrating improvements in student performance, more significant engagement, and a deeper understanding of the studied concepts. At the end of the research, as an educational product of the dissertation, the aim is to produce a PDF guide for the implementation of formative assessment, intended for Chemistry teachers, which will be guided by the results obtained in the field. This guide aims to support the creation of diverse assessment instruments, promoting a more dynamic, interactive, participative, and process-oriented approach rather than results-oriented. Furthermore, the material will provide the formative assessment activities for Electrochemistry tested in the research, explaining the processes and means used for their development.
