SUMMARY:

Geography teaching in Basic Education still faces challenges related to contextualizing content
with the reality experienced by students. Although textbooks distributed by the National
Textbook and Teaching Material Program (PNLD) represent one of the main resources used in
the classroom, they often lack approaches focused on the local scale, which hinders the
connection between school knowledge and lived space. In this context, it becomes essential to
develop teaching materials that consider the territorial, cultural, and environmental specificities
of municipalities. This study aims to present the development of a School Atlas of the
Municipality of Cajazeiras-PB, based on the geographical concepts of place and landscape, in
order to meet the demands of Elementary Education (Final Years), specifically for the 6th and
7th grades, according to the National Curriculum Guidelines for Geography Teaching and the
curricular guidelines of the state of Paraíba. The atlas is intended to be a mediating tool between
teachers, students, and lived space, strengthening geographical reasoning by valuing the local
territory. The research adopts a qualitative approach, involving bibliographic and documentary
review of national and state guidelines for Geography teaching, as well as field research in the
urban and rural areas of Cajazeiras. Interviews were also conducted with teachers and students
from the municipal and state public school systems to identify perceptions, needs, and
suggestions related to the use of teaching materials in Geography and the approach to local
space in the classroom. The construction of the atlas resulted in an illustrated, formative
teaching material adapted to the local context, encompassing elements such as the history,
relief, water resources, vegetation, and population, social, economic, and cultural aspects of
Cajazeiras. The concepts of place and landscape were addressed in an articulated way with the
subjects' experiences, encouraging the recognition of the city as a space of multiple meanings.
The interviews revealed teachers' interest in materials that value the local reality, and students
showed greater engagement when they recognized themselves in the content presented. The
School Atlas of Cajazeiras-PB stands out as a pedagogical resource capable of enhancing the
teaching of Geography in a more meaningful way, bringing school content closer to students'
everyday experiences. By valuing place and landscape as central categories of teaching, the
material contributes to strengthening the bond between the subject and the territory,
encouraging critical reading of space. Furthermore, it responds to curriculum guidelines by
promoting contextualized, integrative learning that is attentive to local particularities.
