SUMMARY:

Issues involving the sustainability of Information Technology (IT) in educational institutions are one of the pillars of management and teaching at universities, as the improper disposal of IT products can constitute a source of environmental contamination and waste of resources. Therefore, the aim of this work was to identify how to control IT assets that can be reused or disassembled for the reuse of their electronic components in other machines. To this end, it was proposed to improve an existing technology platform, REUSE, aiming to enhance IT sustainability, minimize the disposal of IT products, and reuse equipment at UFRN, with the goal of contributing to the construction of a more efficient, sustainable, and economically viable technology management model, encouraging equipment reuse and reducing environmental impact. For this purpose, a process was conducted to monitor the disposal of goods and the REUSE platform, which is a tool for the transfer of assets that can be used in other locations but are no longer needed in their original department. Data collection using REUSE revealed that initially, there was only one product registered on the site, and in October 2024, there were no products registered on REUSE. Among the possible reasons for this were identified the need to change the institutional environment and the entirely manual (non-automated) process for registering, showing interest, and transferring items. Therefore, changes were proposed in the location and access to REUSE, and the automation of processes to facilitate the registration of items, the expression of interest, and the transfer process between units. This process is in the implementation and evaluation phase. However, IT sustainability in federal public universities is a complex challenge but also an opportunity to promote innovation, reduce costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Thus, by expanding the use of sustainable practices, universities can become references in environmental management and inspire other institutions to follow the same way.
