This research investigates the relationship between art and self-knowledge in the context of a high school in Parnamirim, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. It is focused on theteaching of visual arts and their inclusion in pedagogical practices aimed at comprehensive education. This study is based on the understanding that self-knowledge is a constitutive dimension of the educational process, recognised in normative documents. It also engages with critical approaches that question the contemporary challenges facing schools in the face of the hegemony of technical and content-based practices. The research also proposes workshops and reflective practices in formal and informal spaces, seeking to demonstrate how artistic experience, especially in contact with the production, enjoyment and mediation of art works can constitute a privileged space for recognition and transformation of relationships with oneself, with others, and with reality. This perspective integrates cognitive, aesthetic, and socio-emotional dimensions, establishing art education as a strategic field for promoting critical, creative, and democratic subjectivities, whose emphasis on the educational power of art contributes to the appreciation of art education as an indispensable foundation in the formation of individuals.
