The Mirror of Self-Recognition: an Experience of Teaching Visual Arts and Racial Identity in High School Teacher Ana Julia Carvalho Mousinho (Natal-RN)
Teaching of Visual Arts; Racial identity; Afro-Brazilian art.
This Final Course Work presents the results of the action research developed in the regular High School Teacher Ana Julia Carvalho Mousinho, located in Parque dos Coqueiros, in the northern region of Natal-RN. Based on Stuart Hall's (1987) thinking about postmodern identity and considering the aforementioned school context, it is noted that students who are mostly black and indigenous do not recognize themselves as such or do not know their “real” identity. In order to mediate the identity recognition of students in the 2nd year of High School, actions and activities were designed in a sequence in an elective discipline, initially addressing the theme of structural racism and later racial identity. The work adopts as a writing model the report of self-narrative experience and reflective analysis. The objectives of the research are: (a) to propose actions to improve the quality of teaching Visual Arts in basic education; (b) develop a sequenced didactic proposal based on the teaching of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture, Law No. 11,645, of March 2008; (c) raise awareness of the production of Afro-Brazilian artists; (d) promote creative processes in Art in the school context, having as a repertoire Brazilian and contemporary art, produced by black artists; (e) develop a black encyclopedia that serves as a resource and/or tool for the school community. Thus, the research contributes to the theme of racial identity and the teaching of Visual Arts, without exhausting the subject, but broadening the discussion.
