Validation of NCP-QUEST: Instrument for auditing the Nutrition Care Process in Brazil

SUMMARY:

The Nutrition Care Process (PCN) is a systematized, standardized process that contains four steps to address nutritional problems and provide effective, quality care to individuals. A standardized language, the Nutrition Care Process Terminology (TPCN), is used for each step to document nutrition care. To evaluate the PCN/TPCN, audit instruments are used, with the validated and most up-to-date NCP-QUEST. In 2020, in Brazil, the “Consortium for Research and Implementation of the PCN in Brazil” was created, marking the beginning of an effort to implement the PCN/TPCN in the country. Therefore, the objective of this study is to translate and validate the NCP-QUEST into Brazilian Portuguese. This is a methodological study, divided into 3 steps: 1) Translation of the NCP-QUEST into Brazilian Portuguese; 2) Validation of the translated content; and 3) Assessment of the reliability of the instrument. The translation was carried out in 5 stages, with the collaboration of 4 nutritionists who are members of the Consortium for Research and Implementation of the National Curricular Guidelines in Brazil and who are fluent in English, and 1 professional translator. The content validity was analyzed using the Content Validity Index (CVI), both for the item (CVI-I) and for the general instrument (CVI-G). The acceptable value for CVI-I is ≥ 0.78 and for CVI-G is ≥ 0.90. Reliability will be analyzed using α-Krippendorf, with an acceptable value > 0.667. The translation stage was carried out, followed by the validation stage of the translated content, where the CVI-I ranged from 0.80 to 1.00; the CVI-G of the first round was 0.988, while that of the second round was 0.992. The research will now proceed to stage 3 of reliability assessment.
