SUMMARY:

Introduction: Quality of care is a strategic axis of health management, especially when associated with patient safety, an essential dimension for preventing adverse events. Among the practices that directly impact this outcome, hand hygiene stands out as a simple, effective, and low-cost measure; however, it is still marked by low adherence among professionals, particularly in Intensive Care Units. Given this context and the need to improve care processes, it is relevant to develop structured interventions, supported by continuous improvement models, capable of promoting behavior change and strengthening the safety culture. Objective: To evaluate the effect of implementing a PDSA cycle to improve adherence to the hand hygiene protocol among professionals in an Intensive Care Unit. Methodology: This is a quasi-experimental before-and-after study with a quantitative and qualitative approach, based on the PDSA cycle, conducted from January 2026 to February 2026. The research was carried out in the adult Intensive Care Unit of a public state hospital in Fortaleza, CE. The study included 40 healthcare professionals (nurses, nursing technicians, physicians, and physiotherapists) who provide direct patient care; those who were absent during the data collection period were excluded. Data collection occurred in four stages, according to the PDSA cycle: (1) Plan – conducting safety rounds, direct observation, and application of a diagnostic questionnaire (T0); (2) Do – implementation of in-person educational interventions (T1); (3) Study – evaluation through observational audits before (T0), during (T1), and after the intervention (T2); and (4) Act – critical analysis of results, feedback to the team, and proposal for maintenance and/or adjustments of actions. Adherence to hand hygiene was calculated as the proportion of performed opportunities in relation to the total observed. Data were tabulated in Excel® and analyzed using SPSS®, applying descriptive statistics and inferential tests, with a significance level of 5%. The study complied with Resolutions No. 466/2012 and No. 510/2016, ensuring anonymity, confidentiality, and voluntary participation upon signing the Informed Consent Form. Expected results: An increase in adherence to the hand hygiene protocol is expected, promoting safer and more conscious care practices.
