SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: The medication process, also known as the medication chain, is multi-professional and made up of several sub-processes. It can be divided into the prescription of medication, carried out by the doctor; the dispensing of medication carried out by the pharmacy team; and the preparation and administration of medication, usually carried out by the nursing team. Medication errors can occur in any sub-process of the medication chain, but are most frequent in prescription and administration. As it is a complex and error-prone process, it is necessary to implement preventive strategies that can increase patient and professional safety during care. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a quality improvement cycle in the preparation of Benzylpenicillin G Benzathine in a paediatric emergency department. METHODOLOGY: This is a quasi-experimental, before-and-after study, with no control group, using a quality improvement cycle and a quantitative-qualitative approach, carried out in the 2024/2025 biennium. For the proposed assessment, eight quality criteria were defined, focussing exclusively on the preparation stages of Benzylpenicillin G Benzathine, based on the recommendations of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). A total of 60 processes for preparing Benzylpenicillin G Benzathine will be assessed, 30 before and 30 after the educational interventions, which will be designed and carried out according to the weaknesses identified in the first assessment stage. The ethical precepts of Resolution No. 466/12 will be preserved. EXPECTED RESULTS: The results of this study are expected to broaden the knowledge of the team, train nursing professionals to carry out the preparation safely, increase adherence to good practices in the safety of the drug chain by mitigating the existing risks in the process, provide greater safety for paediatric patients in terms of their particularities and ensure the effectiveness of drug treatment.
