RESUMO:

The main objective of this research project is to know and analyse the current reality of libraries inserted on distance learning context, within the ambit of a Higher Education Institution (HEI). This study is developed in the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), which offers distance learning courses since 2005. The mentioned institution utilises face-to-face support centres from the Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB) [a Brazilian government system integrated by public universities that offers higher education distance learning courses in order to facilitate the access of a certain portion of the population to higher education] as operational unities to receive students in a few face-to-face meetings required during the course. Centres are located in several cities of Rio Grande do Norte state, and they must have an adequate structure, containing administrative and academic environments, one of the most important being the library. An informational unity of this nature needs to be organised following the Ministério da Educação (MEC) [Ministry of Education] normative instruments, especially those relative to centre accreditation, institutional accreditation and Quality Reference for Distance Higher Education. The methodology used in this search corresponds to an exploratory and descriptive case study with a quantitative-qualitative approach. The participants of this research are the UAB/UFRN centre coordinators, and the subsequent preliminary results were evidenced: all centres have a library; most of these information units are not computerised nor have librarians. This study considers that the participation of university library in this teaching system, as well as the insertion of librarians in the UFRN’s multidisciplinary team which was selected to work in distance learning, may contribute in the provision of information products and services for students and other participants in the distance learning at that HEI.
