SUMMARY:

This Master’s degree final project consists of the elaboration of an architectural requalification project for a residential building and its façades in a collective housing complex located in Amadora, Portugal. The proposal targets a diverse user profile—from families to students and young adults—accommodated either in conventional housing units or through a co-living system, with emphasis on improving environmental comfort. The original construction system does not meet current thermal and acoustic comfort requirements, as no legislation addressed these aspects at the time the building was erected. This raises the central question: how can environmental comfort be enhanced in an existing built complex to meet current regulations? The research methodology included documentary investigation, consultation of public databases and legal frameworks, analysis of bioclimatic conditions, and review of the Portuguese acoustic standards for buildings. It also involved examination of archival documents and original project materials provided by the Municipality of Amadora, as well as site and contextual data. Additionally, reference case studies were analyzed to support design decisions. Based on the collected information, the project’s concept, architectural program, design goals, and critical issues were defined. The study presents the current condition of the residential complex, its bioclimatic constraints, acoustic performance, and applicable legal requirements. Preliminary project results demonstrate strategies to improve environmental comfort, such as adding façade openings to enable cross-ventilation in all units—particularly beneficial in summer—and insulating the cavity between double masonry walls and replacing existing window frames with higher-performance systems to enhance both thermal and acoustic comfort in winter.
