AQUILOMBAR: RESTAURANT PROJECT FOR THE QUILOMBOLA COMMUNITY OF CAIANA DOS CRIOULOS
Vernacular Architecture; Sustainability; Quilombola Identity.
This professional master's thesis presents the design of a restaurant for the
Quilombola community Caiana dos Crioulos, located in Alagoa Grande,
Paraíba, Brazil. The document comprises a technical report and the
architectural project, developed with the aim of proposing a building that
respects cultural traditions, valuing the quilombola identity of the community. It
integrates the principles of vernacular architecture into the local landscape, with
a focus on sustainability and the use of local materials. The central problem of
the project stems from the need to create a restaurant that supports communitybased
tourism, one of the residents' economic livelihoods, which features
quilombola gastronomy as one of its attractions. The methodological
procedures adopted begin with a theoretical-conceptual deepening, carried out
through bibliographic research and analysis of design references related to the
theme. This study provided the basis for the architectural program, defining
dilemmas and goals that guided the design process. Among the main dilemmas
involved is the relationship between vernacular architecture and contemporary
solutions aiming for the building's sustainability and resilience. The study
focuses on valuing the local landscape and culture, seeking to balance practical
needs with the design solution. Based on this knowledge, the project was
developed with the aid of the course disciplines and various forms of
documentation. The work seeks to propose architectural strategies for
environmental comfort, meeting the specific needs of the community. As a
result of the studies and simulations carried out, the final proposal incorporates
natural shading techniques and cross-ventilation, aligned with the climatic
needs of the Brejo Paraibano region, while also proposing the use of
construction materials available locally. Thus, the work presents an architectural
proposal that meets the specific objectives of the project and contributes to the
preservation of the quilombo's activities and local identity, establishing a link
with the landscape. The final solution combines traditional elements with
contemporary practices, providing a space for gathering and preservation,
aligned with the community's needs and context.
