SUMMARY:

Master’s degree final project consists of the elaboration of an architectural project of a Public elementary echool project, with emphasis on spatial flexibility and the STEAM approach, which was developed based on the following starting question: “How can educational architecture respond to constant changes of the teaching environment (through the need to expand, the versatility of spaces and the insertion of technological supports/new pedagogical approaches?)”. Its aim is to design a public school for Natal/RN that is flexible and appropriate to the STEAM approach. In order to achieve the general objective, the following specific objectives were set: (a) understand the dynamics of the functioning of an Elementary Education institution, considering its objectives and user needs; (b) study the STEAM pedagogical approach and understand how it can be reflected in design solutions for the school environment; (c) research spatial flexibility guidelines applied to school architecture and (d) adopt design strategies and appropriate construction/structural systems. In this way, the general objective consists of designing the school project itself and, in order to achieve the general objective, the following specific objectives were outlined: (a) to understand the dynamics of how an elementary school operates, considering its objectives and user needs; (b) to study the STEAM pedagogical approach and understand how it can be reflected in design solutions for the school environment; (c) to research spatial flexibility guidelines applied to school architecture and (d) to adopt appropriate design strategies and construction/structural systems. In justifying the study and the architectural proposal, we reflect on the current reality and the new demands that have been proposed in relation to children/adolescents and their social role in 21st century society, highlighting the need to produce study environments that are truly qualified to meet educational needs, presupposing an understanding of the student (user) as an active actor, transformer and creator of new scenarios. To support the architectural proposal, a theoretical and conceptual study of the subject was initially carried out, through bibliographical research and studies of design references. Then, the architectural program was developed, defining the project's dilemmas and goals. From this base, and with the support of the course's curricular components, the design process was gradually developed and mapped, through various forms of recording, from the initial stages of studying the constraints, conception and development of the architectural design. The result is an architectural composition made up of classroom modules (organized by areas of knowledge, based on brazilian model), separated from each other by classroom storages (to make it easier to change the layout, promoting flexibility). Moreover, it is also a school complex of predominantly ground floor buildings, with the exception of the administrative block, which has two floors, creating a visual hierarchy and facilitating supervision. Finally, the proposal values the dialog between architecture and the community, through design solutions that allow the community in general to use the spaces, such as the auditorium, and especially the park created at the front of the site.
