Grao crematory park: architectural design with emphasis on atmosphere
Crematorium. Phenomenology. Atmosphere. Architectural-landscape design.
This Professional Master's Thesis, currently in the qualification phase, comprises a technical report and a design intervention proposal. Its objective is to conceive a preliminary design for a crematory park emphasizing its potential architectural atmosphere. The interest in the realm of funerary architecture stems from six years of dedication to projects aimed at improving the bereaved’s experience within a company in this field in Natal. The exposure to this unique professional context - working in a complex area that sharpens sensitivity and often lies outside the traditional scope of architectural practice - has fostered reflections on the development of funerary solutions amidst an increasingly challenging demographic scenario. Crematories stand out as alternatives that mitigate environmental and territorial issues faced by traditional cemeteries while offering flexibility and suitability to contemporary demands of death and mourning. To support this research, studies were conducted on death in contemporary times and the evolution of cremation practices, focusing on the Brazilian context. Additionally, research delved into phenomenology and its influence on architecture, aiming to understand how this approach impacts the experiences of those engaging with these spaces. The analysis of reference projects was based on methodologies by McCarter and Pallasmaa (2012), Shirazi (2014), and Baker (1998), supplemented by semi-structured interviews with professionals directly or indirectly linked to the funerary sector. Focusing on specific objectives, the research sought architectural strategies that transcend functional pragmatism, offering symbolism resonating with all users. The central challenge was to balance a complex atmosphere that simultaneously accommodates diverse uses and fosters harmonious integration with the surroundings, while respecting the ritual-architectural journey of the bereaved. Given the current stage of this work, the proposal, located in the Felipe Camarao neighborhood in Natal, is still under development and encompasses an estimated area of 7,800 m². At this phase, analyses and adjustments are being carried out to refine the design and technical guidelines. The final results, including definitive solutions and detailed preliminary design, will be fully presented during the thesis defense, marking the conclusion of this Master’s program.
