MEMORIAL SOL: ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT FOR A PUBLIC CEMETERY VERTICAL WITH AN AMBIENCE FOCUS
Vertical Cemetery. Ambience. Architectural design
This Professional Master's Degree Final Paper, comprising a technical report and an architectural project, aims to develop a project for a vertical public cemetery for the municipality of Parnamirim/RN, with a focus on ambience. It discusses the transformations that have taken place in cemetery spaces over time, as well as the public health issues inherent in the activity and the use of new funerary techniques and other spatial configurations, such as vertical cemeteries. In this context, the architectural project starts to encompass a series of technical and functional requirements aimed at current demands, but can also consider physical-environmental elements that soften the hostile and negative image commonly related to the cemetery, helping the use of space by the bereaved and the employees of this type of place. To develop the project, a theoretical and conceptual in-depth study of cemetery architecture and the concepts of ambience was carried out, as well as studies of direct and indirect design precedents. Next, the architectural program was developed, defining the dilemmas and goals of the project, based on Kowaltowski et. al. (2011). From this basis, and with the help of the course's curricular components, the design process was developed through various forms of recording, from the initial stages of studies of constraints, concept, design, formal studies and the architectural project presented here, according to Mahfuz's methodology (1995). The result achieved consists of an architectural project for a vertical public cemetery integrated into its surroundings, with a reinforced concrete structure, made up of a set of blocks and contemplative outdoor areas, containing 1,260 loculi for storing bodies and 585 ossuaries for remains, totaling a construction area of 5,582.62m². The focus is on the attributes of the place that can create a more welcoming and peaceful environment for its users and local residents.
