SUMMARY:

International migration involves not only physical displacement but also a reconfiguration of social
ties and relationships, contributing to transformations in sense of place, that is, in the meanings
people attribute to the places they inhabit and through which they move. This research aims to
understand transformations in sense of place based on the narratives of people who experience
voluntary international migration. To this end, it adopts a qualitative methodology with a narrative
approach. The participants are three Brazilians who have lived outside Brazil for at least one year
and who left the country after the age of 25. Each participant was interviewed individually in three
sessions. The first session focused on learning about each participant’s migration history, their
motivations for leaving, their initial relationships with the destination country, and aspects related to
their sense of home. In the second session, based on the photovoice strategy, participants presented
photographs of places that are meaningful to them in both their country of origin and their destination country. Finally, in the third session, participants were invited to synthesize the elements they consider most significant in shaping their sense of place through the migration experience.Data collection is still ongoing and, therefore, the discussions presented here are preliminary. Thus far, participants have highlighted that Brazil has become, for them, a set of places marked by the presence of important people, meaningful memories, and/or the possibility of experiencing activities and practices they associate with being Brazilian, such as Carnival. In the destination country, meaningful relationships with places are likewise shaped by the people who inhabit them, but they appear to be strongly connected to opportunities for professional development. An emerging finding is the relationship between sense of place and life-course stage.
