SUMMARY:

The youth is understood as a developing period marked by many conceptions
that seek, each one in their own way, to delineate its boundaries and meanings. However, to
comprehend the multiplexity of this theme, it is necessary to recognize it as an outcome of social,
cultural and historical constructions. (Campos & Paiva, 2018; Costa, 2016; Reis, 2019). It is
understood that the experience of youth holds in its genesis, a plurality of experiences and multiple
existences, that corresponds to one’s different historical, political, economical and social context. As
such, it is recognized that each young, in their own distinct contexts, has their self and singular
experiences, that does not make possible the single and exclusive definition about the meaning of
being young, which will present itself in a reality of multiple manners (Santos & Yamamoto, 2018).
Between the distinct modes of experience youth, the present research focuses on the experiences of
young people with disabilities. For this, we resort to Disability Studies, specially to the feminist
marxist theorists linked to the social disability model, that englobes this experience, in the context of
the capitalist and oppressing relationships, as a result between the interaction of an injured body
and a barrier structured society (Diniz, 2007). Such perspective expands the comprehension about
the disability to beyond an individual condition, recognizing it as a constitutive analysis category of
the subjectivity and articulating it in an intersectional manner with other social markers. Moreover,
it brings into the debate issues of dependence and interdependence, care relationships, and the
experience of pain among people with disabilities (Gesser, Costa & Luiz, 2024). Thus, the general
objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between disability and youth experience, based
on the experiences of young people with disabilities in the city of Natal (RN). Having the specific
objectives: a) investigate the meanings attributed to being a young person with disability in the
context of Natal (RN); e b) analyze how social barriers present in the different contexts of these young
people’s lives shape their experiences of youth. The methodological approach will be developed
through workshops inspired by photovoice, a participatory methodology that enables participants to
register, by photographs, aspects of their realities and experiences, fostering processes of reflection,
meaning making and collective discussion of the produced images (Meirinho, 2017; Wang, 2006).
Following the research’s approval by the Ethics Committee, it is intended to conduct four workshops
with groups consisting of four to six participants. Each workshop will be conducted in two sessions,
with a one-week interval between sessions. During the first meeting will occur the initial contact with
the participants, the mobilization of the themes that engage with the realities of these young peoples
and the guidance regarding taking photographs. In the second meeting, participants will have an
opportunity to share with the group their interpretations and reasons for the record and choice of
each selected photograph. The target public consists of youngs with disabilities, aged between 15
and 29 years, residing in the city of Natal and with physical, hearing/deafness, visual, intellectual,
or multiple disabilities. The analysis of the materials produced during the workshops will be
conducted through the Meaning Nuclei, following the approach proposed by Aguiar and Ozella
(2013), based on the principles of Vygotsky’s Historical-Cultural Psychology.
