SUMMARY:

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a rare, multisystem genetic disorder that, in addition to its respiratory
and gastrointestinal manifestations, may influence cognitive, emotional, and behavioral
development throughout childhood and adolescence. Although recent studies have suggested
possible impairments in executive functions among this population, the available evidence
remains inconclusive, largely due to the predominance of deficit-oriented approaches and the
scarcity of investigations grounded in developmental theoretical frameworks. The present
study aims to investigate the neuropsychological profile of executive functions in children and
adolescents with Cystic Fibrosis receiving care at a specialized referral center at the Onofre
Lopes University Hospital, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), examining its
relationship with clinical, nutritional, behavioral, and sociocultural factors. The study is
grounded in Cultural-Historical Psychology and Cultural-Historical Neuropsychology, which
conceive human development as the dialectical unity between biological processes and social
mediation. This is a cross-sectional, observational, mixed-methods multiple-case study.Children and
adolescents with a confirmed diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis will undergo
neuropsychological assessment using the Child Executive Functions Battery (FEC), the Child
Behavior Checklist (CBCL), semi-structured interviews with caregivers, and a review of
multidisciplinary medical records. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive and
multivariate statistical procedures, including cluster analysis, whereas qualitative data will be
integrated with neuropsychological findings to investigate the organization of functional
systems and the factors underlying developmental trajectories. The study is expected to
broaden current knowledge regarding executive functioning in children and adolescents with
Cystic Fibrosis and to provide evidence supporting neuropsychological assessment,
interdisciplinary care, and intervention strategies aimed at promoting development and quality
of life.
