SUMMARY:

This research analyzes the experience of motherhood among women who are mothers of children with disabilities, understanding state neglect as an expression of the capitalist organization of life. It is based on historical-dialectical materialism, articulating contributions from Marxist feminism, Social Reproduction Theory, and Emancipatory and Feminist Disability Studies. The objective is to investigate how the neoliberal dismantling of public policies and ableism affect the motherhood of mothers of children with Trisomy 21, a genetic condition known as Down Syndrome. This is a qualitative study that used structured interviews with 10 women from the Mães T21 RN collective, residents of Rio Grande do Norte. The diversity of the interviewees included various aspects of race, income, sexual orientation, and territorial contexts. The results indicate that care is socially distributed unevenly, remaining gendered and marked by female overload in the face of insufficient state support. The analysis shows that the maternal experience is permeated by fear related to the possible health demands of the child and by the perception of discriminatory views from society. It is concluded that the collective acts as a fundamental support and political resistance network in the face of state neglect, strengthening the anti-ableist struggle and the quest to guarantee rights. Finally, we emphasize the importance of consolidating public policies that recognize care as a responsibility of the State and a fundamental aspect of a dignified life.
