SUMMARY:

The Latin American subcontinent has historically been characterized by multiple manifestations of violence, including elevated rates of homicide, incarceration, and torture, which affect the racialized working class in the region, constituting a significant manifestation of state violence. Such phenomena are deeply intertwined with the specific pattern of Latin American development, which, in turn, maintains a dialectical relationship with the developmental trajectory of the imperialist countries. Grounded in this premise, the present doctoral research seeks to apprehend the economic and political determinations of state violence within dependent capitalism and its implications for the dialectic of imperialism and dependence, based on the theoretical category of the Latin American Dependent State. To this end, the specific objectives of the study were: (i) to discuss the formation and configuration of the State under dependent capitalism; (ii) to identify the particular characteristics of state violence as a corollary of the development of the Latin American Dependent State; and (iii) to analyse the implications of state violence for the relations between imperialism and dependence. The research is theoretically grounded in Marxian social theory, drawing upon Historical- Dialectical Materialism in dialogue with István Mészáros’s contributions on the sociometabolic order of capital and the State, as well as the Marxist Theory of Dependence. Structured as a theoretical essay, the study advances the thesis that the pervasive state violence observed in dependent economies constitutes not only an expression of the inherent contradictions of this mode of development and its corresponding Dependent State, but also a manifestation of the dialectic of imperialism and dependence. In this dynamic, there occurs, in the opposite direction of value transfer, a transference of the contradictions of the capital’s sociometabolic order to the Latin American region. The research therefore concludes that overcoming state violence necessarily entails the transcendence of both the State and capital themselves.
