THE EXPERIENCE OF DOMESTIC WORKERS ON DIGITAL PLATFORMS
Uberization, Platformization, Lived experience, Domestic work, Cleaning workers.
This research has investigated the lived experience of day-laborer domestic workers who had been using cleaning-service apps. Guided by the theoretical framework of Historical-Cultural Psychology and Marxist feminism of the Theory of Social Reproduction, this reasearch was divided into two studies: the first of which is complementary in nature, and corresponds to the characterization of four platform companies operating in the region of Greater Natal (RN). The data were collected from information available on their websites, apps and social networks. The analysis aimed to explain the specificities of the cleaning-service platform companies and how they operate. As concerning to the second study, a number semi-structured interviews were conducted with
four day workers with experience in working through using cleaning-service apps. To this end, the chosen methodology was to conduct semi-structured interviews, and two analyses were carried out for data analysis: intra-case and inter-case, resulting in the formation of axes and announcers. The integrated analysis of the two studies, which means the reports of the lived experiences of the day workers and the characterization of the cleaning platforms, made it possible to identify how the management models of the platform companies and the relationships established in the user-contractor's household sphere affected the experience of the cleaning workers in this context, resulting in a double subordination: platform company > cleaning workers < user-contractors. This result suggests the identification of a qualitatively different condition of subordination experienced by the domestic cleaning workers. This is also not observed in other uberized categories.
