I DON'T WANT TO BE A MOTHER, LIKE MANY WOMEN
Not maternity; Women of reproductive age; Genre
The absence of children is expected to increase in the future among Brazilian women. According to data from the National Demographic and Health Survey (PNDS, 2006), the number of Brazilian women who have remained childless has been increasing in Brazil in almost all age groups. Among women who do not have children there are those who are voluntarily childless, that is, women who do not want to have children by choice, without reporting biological limitation. In this context, the following work aims to analyze the socioeconomic, demographic and gender factors associated with voluntary non-maternity in Brazil. For the development of the study, data from the National Demographic and Health Survey (PNDS) for 1996 and 2006 were used. The methodology consists of a descriptive analysis, which will allow to verify the main socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of women who do not want having children, and whether there is a predominance of women who do not want to have children in specific groups in society, and a binary logistic regression model, in order to understand the influence of such characteristics on the decision to have children or not. Therefore, in view of the increasing number of women who do not want to have children and the decreasing and declining fertility levels, it is essential to understand the context and reproductive preferences of women who do not want to have children.
