SUMMARY:

This study analyzes the processes of social reintegration among formerly incarcerated individuals assisted by the Escritório Social of Natal, drawing on their life trajectories. It seeks to understand how experiences before, during, and after incarceration shape different possibilities for maintaining, resuming, transforming, and building life after prison, and how different forms of the continuity of incarceration affect these possibilities. Adopting a qualitative approach, the research was conducted through fieldwork at the Escritório Social of Natal and included interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals, a family member, and staff professionals; observation of the service’s daily activities; field notes; documentary analysis; and data on individuals registered with the institution. Interviews with formerly incarcerated individuals constituted the primary source for reconstructing and comparing their trajectories, while the other sources contributed to understanding social ties, institutional dynamics, and the conditions under which these trajectories unfold. The findings show that release from prison does not bring all forms of incarceration-related effects to an end, as they may persist across legal-institutional, social, and experiential dimensions. Their effects, however, are not homogeneous, since they affect individuals situated within different relationships, conditions, responsibilities, resources, and social positions. The analysis demonstrates that carceral continuity and social reintegration can coexist within the same life trajectories and that family, work, religion, social networks, material conditions, and institutional mediations do not have predetermined effects, but rather depend on the conditions under which they can be accessed and mobilized. Comparing the trajectories further reveals that reintegration does not amount to a simple return to a previous condition; it may involve maintaining or resuming relationships and positions, transforming existing conditions, distancing oneself from previous practices and relationships, or creating new possibilities for life. The study concludes that social reintegration is a relational, temporal, and unequal process that can only be understood by considering different life trajectories and the ways in which carceral continuity intersects with the conditions, relationships, and possibilities that shape life after prison.
