SUMMARY:

Climate change increases socio-environmental risks and deepens social inequalities, while highlighting the need to overcome the separation between society and nature in order to address the ongoing ecological crisis. In cities, its effects also expose asymmetries in the appropriation of and access to environmental resources. This doctoral research project aims to analyze how the unequal distribution of ecosystem services increases socio-environmental vulnerabilities in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in order to inform Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) actions aimed at reducing inequalities and promoting climate justice. The first hypothesis is that there are significant differences in the distribution of thermal and hydrological regulation ecosystem services among Natal’s administrative regions and at the intra-urban level. The second hypothesis is that the spatial distribution of vegetation cover, represented by vegetation patches, does not correspond to the distribution of street trees, with inequalities occurring among neighborhoods and administrative regions. The research will adopt a mixed-methods approach based on data triangulation, integrating spatial analysis and census data with a perception-based component that will include questionnaires and focus groups to examine residents’ perceptions and experiences. Preliminary results indicate inequalities in the distribution of ecosystem services among neighborhoods. Although the highest vegetation indices are found in peripheral areas, this vegetation cover does not necessarily correspond to the presence of street trees or to the shading of spaces used by pedestrians. The research will propose EbA guidelines based on the implementation and connection of urban ecological corridors, with the aim of increasing vegetation-cover connectivity and access to ecosystem services in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte.
