SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates labor processes within the illicit drug trafficking market in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, taking the native category correria as a situated expression of the contemporary transformations of labor power on the periphery of capitalism. The point of departure lies in apprehending drugs as commodities, illegality as a specific juridical form of social regulation, and violence as a constitutive mediation in the reproduction of illicit drug markets. To this end, the study adopts a method grounded in historical-dialectical materialism and an artisanal methodological approach centered on in-depth interviews with individuals currently serving or formerly subjected to imprisonment for drug trafficking within the criminal justice system of Rio Grande do Norte. Through their trajectories, perceptions, and labor experiences, the research seeks to grasp the concrete forms of organization of illicit labor. The analytical trajectory of the dissertation unfolds through three articulated whens: first, it discusses the ontological foundations of illicit labor and its insertion into capitalist sociability; second, it analyzes violence, criminalization, and penal regulation as mechanisms for the differential administration of illegality and the working class; finally, it reconstructs the particularities of labor relations within drug trafficking in Rio Grande do Norte, highlighting phenomena such as the transitivity between legal, informal, and illicit markets, labor flexibility, unstable hierarchies, violent discipline, and the territorial heterogeneity of the correria. Ultimately, the dissertation argues that illicit labor constitutes a situated dialectical synthesis of the category of labor power, seeking to reveal how the boundaries between legality and illegality participate in the very reproduction of contemporary capitalist sociability.
