SUMMARY:

This doctoral thesis proposes an investigation into the experiences of feminist solidarity economy as lived by rural and quilombola (African slave descendants) women in the Seridó region (an ecoregion of semi-arid tropical vegetation) of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil. The central problem lies in the persistence of gender inequality in Brazil, which manifests differently in the urban and rural areas of Rio Grande do Norte. While urban women face disparities in the labor market and discrimination, rural women contend with the invisibility of their activities and limited access to public policies and resources. This reality is even more pronounced for Black rural and quilombola women, who experience marginalization based on gender, race, and social class, placing them in a state of greater socioeconomic vulnerability. Furthermore, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding how these women build practices and knowledge rooted in a feminist solidarity economy, articulating resistance, autonomy, and care within their territories and challenging the logics of capitalism, patriarchy, and coloniality. Thus, the main research question is: "How do rural and quilombola women in the Seridó region construct practices and knowledge that articulate resistance, autonomy, and care through a feminist solidarity economy, and in what ways do these practices challenge the logics of capitalism, patriarchy, and coloniality in rural territories?" The general objective of the research is to analyze how rural and quilombola women in the Seridó Potiguar/RN region build experiences of Feminist Solidarity Economy as a form of resistance, collective care, and valorization of local knowledge, in confrontation with the logics of capitalism, patriarchy, and coloniality. The theoretical framework is anchored in Feminist Economics and Solidarity Economy, with a decolonial and intersectional perspective. Feminist Economics criticizes the traditional economic view for making domestic and care work invisible, aiming to place the valorization of human life and sustainability at its core. Solidarity Economy is seen as an emancipatory practice that opposes capitalism, promoting cooperation, self-management, and collective well-being, as well as being a tool for territorial development. The research integrates the concept of intersectionality to analyze multiple oppressions based on gender, race, and class. It also explores the notions of female resistance and re-existence and the concept of body-territory, highlighting the struggles for socio-environmental justice in the countryside. The methodology will be based on Participatory Action Research, with a qualitative approach and inspired by the multiple case study strategy. Two groups of women in the Seridó Potiguar region will be analyzed: Sabores e Delícias do Umarizeiro (Flavors and Delights of the Umarizeiro) (rural women) and Mulheres Renovadas (Renewed Women) (quilombola women), both in Lagoa Nova, RN. Data collection techniques include: participant observation, field diaries, photographic records, focus groups, life history interviews, and documentary analysis from the Cáritas Diocesana de Caicó and the Grupo de Pesquisa e Extensão Territórios do Semiárido (SEMIAR) (Semi-Arid Territories Research and Extension Group), as the groups being studied are affiliated with these organizations. The field research and data analysis will be conducted through a critical thematic approach, connecting the narratives systematized in the field research and selected documents with the concepts of resistance, re-existence, autonomy, and feminist and solidarity economies.
