SUMMARY:

Studies indicate that from the 20th century onwards, there was a greater concentration of LGBTQIA+ individuals in urban areas, where these spaces became a refuge for the community and a pillar of sexual and libertarian emancipation movements. This scenario linked migration to metropolises with the need to ensure freedom, seek rights, and establish sociability territories. Urban migration, often associated with the pursuit of autonomy, has consistently reflected the creation of an imaginary in which urban environments are idealized as spaces of greater freedom, enabling the expression of diverse and dissident gender identities. In this context, the main objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate, through a gender studies lens, the resistance practices adopted by LGBTQIA+ individuals in rural contexts in response to heteronormativity, violence, and LGBTQIA+phobia. The research hypothesizes that in small and rural communities, there is greater social control over individuals and that media and social networks promote an idealized imaginary of LGBTQIA+ freedom and experiences in urban and metropolitan areas, where the expression of (dis)gender identities is facilitated. Thus, one form of resistance is migration to large urban centers. However, the study questions whether this supposed quest for cosmopolitan freedom effectively results in greater emancipation or merely reflects a positive imaginary projected onto urban spaces. Methodologically, the research adopts an interdisciplinary and qualitative approach, with data collection based on bibliographic reviews, social media monitoring, and semi-structured interviews, using the "snowball" sampling technique. Preliminary results indicate that, although cities are often idealized as spaces of freedom and refuge, both rural and urban environments present significant challenges for LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially given policy setbacks that largely exclude this population from public plans influenced by conservative and anti-gender discourses. It is partially concluded that remaining in rural territories can represent an active resistance process that challenges the patriarchal, conservative, and hegemonic norms still present in these areas. In summary, the imaginary conception that large cities serve as refuges for rural LGBTQIA+ individuals is being demystified as collectives and movements, such as those promoted by the MST, emerge to foster discussions on gender and diversity, proposing inclusive actions for these populations in rural contexts.
