SUMMARY:

This research seeks to understand contemporary audiovisual editing, taking into account the rise of streaming services within the cinematic context. The objective is to identify key patterns linked to the tensions between two major industries currently vying for the global film market. On one hand, the Hollywood industry, comprising studios long established in film production and distribution. On the other, companies originating in the technology sector, specifically streaming platforms like Netflix and Apple TV, that have become major players in audiovisual production. Understanding this rivalry requires examining the complex interplay of economics, society, and technology, all of which are intertwined with the aesthetic patterns this study aims to reveal. Accordingly, the research begins with an empirical approach to launch an integrated discussion of these aspects. Initially, works were selected based on a survey of directors who have ties to Hollywood and currently produce films via streaming platforms. Next, a cinemetric analysis (Salt, 2001; Salt, 2009; Tsivian, 2009; Cutting, 2011) will be conducted to identify measurable characteristics, whether shared or divergent, within the corpus. Finally, the results of the cinemetric analysis will be evaluated against the theoretical perspectives of the neoformalism (Thompson, 1988; Bordwell and Thompson, 2013; Bordwell, 2006; Bordwell and Carroll, 1996) and post-continuity (Shaviro, 2010). Both approaches offer qualitative and quantitative perspectives on contemporary filmmaking, particularly regarding “intensified continuity” (Bordwell, 2006) and “post-continuity” (Shaviro, 2010), making them essential for complementing or even challenging the empirical findings.
