Representations of Northeastern Brazil on BookTok Brasil: An analysis of content produced by influencers about books and authors from Northeastern Brazil on TikTok.
BookTok; Literature; Northeast Brazil; Influencers.
This study seeks to understand the extent to which content produced on BookTok – the literary community on the TikTok platform – that features books written by Northeastern Brazilian authors negotiates, reinforces, or challenges historical stereotypes associated with the Northeast region. To that end, the research aims to investigate and analyze the main characteristics of these videos. Grounded in the theoretical contributions of authors such as Albuquerque Júnior (2011), Santiago Neto (2024), Sibilia (2007), among others, the study adopts an exploratory methodological approach with a qualitative-quantitative bias, combining literature review, netnography (Kozinets, 2014), and content analysis (Bardin, 1977). The corpus consists of videos identified through searches using the terms “livros nordestinos” and “autores nordestinos,” covering a time frame from February to July 2025. Data collection was carried out using two new TikTok accounts created specifically for the research, based in Natal (RN) and São Paulo (SP), in order to observe potential geolocation-based variations in algorithmic results. The analysis considers elements such as the influencers’ locations, the books mentioned, the audiovisual resources employed, and the presence of stereotypes or strategies for valuing Northeastern Brazilian literature.
