SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to analyze the discourse expressed in the reports published on the Tribuna do Norte, g1 RN and Saiba Mais portals about the action promoted by the City of Natal on February 11, 2021, which ordered the removal of homeless people who lived in the Maria Lucia Santos occupation, located on the Viaduto do Baldo, on the border of the historic neighborhoods: Alecrim and Cidade Alta, to observe the discursive strategies used by these vehicles that imply in the persuasion of public opinion. It is from the concept of discourse, proposed by van Dijk (2002) and translated by Irineu et al (2020, p. 35), which defines it as “a specific communicative event, in general, and a written or oral form of verbal interaction or use of language, in particular”, in addition to also being characterized as non-verbal elements, such as images and videos, that we will seek to understand the discursive strategies and the meaning that such discourses aim to produce and transmit. To this end, we will use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a research methodology, based on van Dijk's (2016) sociocognitive approach, especially the discourse-cognition-society triangle theory, which expresses the idea that texts have meanings because they are attributed to them in a sociocognitive way, but not by their own meaning. The historical, political and social context is the basic path to perceiving the exercise of power over a group in a situation of social vulnerability practiced through the persuasion of public opinion. For this reason, with this study, based on the analyses to be carried out, we intend to document the ideological traits of the media outlets studied so that we can record, together with other studies on the homeless population, the discourses made in the media about this public.
