SUMMARY:

The present work is the result of research carried out at the Ilê Olorum Candomblé terreiro, a house of culture and religiosity with an Afro-indigenous matrix, using the technique of participant observation and a choreographic experiment, which has the title: “Xirê Odara”. This research focuses on observing and understanding the ancestral cult of Xirê de Candomblé to propose an artistic production. In it, African ancestry is discussed as a heritage of people who were enslaved and freed themselves in continuous struggles of resistance, from colonization to the present day, before, for freedom, then, for human dignity and, today, full citizenship. With it, we propose to discuss the following question: what meanings can arise from a contemporary choreographic composition, based on the dance motives of the Candomblé orixás, for social affirmation, construction of belonging and representation of black dancing bodies? To do so, we reflect on how Brazilian society constructed for itself the image of people of African descent, in a colonialist imaginary. It is a fact that this imaginary has been deconstructed, based on works by black authors, in contemporary sociology. In parallel, we reviewed studies of modern choreographic composition, which is based on colonialist dance models, to propose the construction of a dance performance, based on the observation of the dances of the orixás, as they occur in a Candomblé terreiro. To compose the choreography in question, we based ourselves on the symbolic inheritances of the ancestral meaning of the orixás dance.
