SUMMARY:

Introduction: Road running, particularly the five-kilometer distance, has shown a significant increase in participation in recent years due to its accessibility and the benefits to physical and mental health. Despite the positive adaptations induced by regular practice, the high mechanical demands of running may lead to delayed-onset muscle soreness and reduced functional performance. In this context, post-exercise recovery strategies are essential, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a promising approach by acting on central mechanisms related to pain, fatigue, and muscle function. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on post-exercise recovery in road runners after a 5-km run. Methods: This is a randomized, controlled, and blinded clinical trial conducted in the municipality of Santa Cruz, RN, Brazil, with a sample of 40 runners randomly allocated into two groups: active tDCS group (G1) and sham tDCS group (G2). Participants will be assessed before and after the run and will undergo three tDCS sessions with 24-hour intervals between sessions. Outcomes will include perceived pain and muscle fatigue, pressure pain threshold, quadriceps muscle strength, perceived recovery, and functional performance assessed by the Side Hop Test. Expected results: It is expected that the active tDCS group will present better recovery outcomes compared to the sham group, including lower pain and muscle fatigue, higher pressure pain threshold, improved muscle strength, higher perceived recovery, and better functional performance in the Side Hop Test.
