AREA: Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional
SUMMARY:

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by airway
inflammation, variable symptoms, and airflow limitation. The diversity of phenotypes
and endotypes affects diagnosis and, consequently, treatment, contributing to
challenges in disease management. Mobile health strategies have demonstrated
potential to optimize treatment, promote self-care, and reduce adverse events.
However, there is limited availability of tools—particularly national ones—justifying
the development of e-ASMA.Methods: This is a software development study based on
the Double Diamond model and the Software Development Life Cycle. The project received favorable approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal
University of Rio Grande do Norte. The development of e-ASMA involved specialist
physicians, information technology professionals, and patients with asthma across
different age groups, from conception to usability validation. The process comprised
five stages: (1) requirements gathering, (2) definition of functionalities, (3) design
definition, (4) prototyping, and (5) usability validation. Throughout these stages,
analyses of existing asthma management applications, interviews with specialists, and
standardized usability validation tests were conducted, ensuring a user-centered
approach. Results: During the requirements-gathering stage, 11 applications were
analyzed, only some of which were available in Portuguese. None of the analyzed
applications included questionnaires validated for the Brazilian population. Two of
them offered integrated educational materials. Among the functionalities designed for
e-ASMA are the provision of clinical reports, the inclusion of an action plan and
customizable asthma education, as well as the assessment of asthma control using a
national tool. In total, e-ASMA comprises 12 functionalities and 255 screens.
Prototyping was performed using the Swift programming language (iOS). In the
preliminary validation, using the System Usability Scale, eight adults with asthma
participated, and the application achieved a mean score of 79 points (±10.68),
indicating good usability. Conclusion: e-ASMA emerges as a support tool for patients
with asthma and primary care professionals. Additionally, the description of its
development stages may guide the creation of new mobile health solutions within the
national context.
