SUMMARY:
This thesis has as its object of study the organization of the teaching of Mathematics in the textbook
of the early years of Elementary School in relation to the formation and development of the
semiotic function of children. It is based on the understanding that mathematical learning requires
the appropriation of sign-symbolic systems, such as numerals, operative signs, schemes, tables,
graphs, codes, models, manipulative materials, written records and statements of problems, which
are not only didactic resources, but cultural instruments to guide intellectual activity. The problem
that guides the investigation consists in understanding how the collection The Conquest of
Mathematics, in the volumes of the 1st and 2nd year of Elementary School, organizes the teaching
of Mathematics in relation to the formation and development of the semiotic function of children.
The general objective is to analyze how this collection organizes the teaching of Mathematics and
to what extent it favors the formation of the semiotic function as a psychological instrument of
mathematical thinking. The research is based on the Historical-Cultural Theory, the Activity
Approach of Psychology, the theory of the planned formation of mental actions and concepts and
the Psychosemiotics of N. G. Sálmina. Based on this framework, the semiotic function is
understood as the ability to create, use, modify, replace and transform signs and symbols as
psychological tools of intellectual activity, expressed in the semiotic activities of substitution,
coding, decoding, schematization and modeling. Methodologically, this is a qualitative research,
of a documentary nature, centered on the analysis of the Student's Books and the Teacher's Manuals
of the 1st and 2nd year volumes of the collection The Conquest of Mathematics, approved in the
PNLD 2023. The analysis was guided by a protocol elaborated from the theoretical framework of
the research, contemplating the characterization of the work, the conceptions of teaching,
mathematics, learning, mathematical language, mathematical thinking and problem solving, as
well as the presence of sign-symbolic means, semiotic activities, action plans and pedagogical
intentionality in the formation of the semiotic function. The results indicate that the collection has
significant semiotic potential, by mobilizing different languages, records, representations,
manipulative materials, codes, tables, graphs, games and problem-situations. In the 1st year,
activities supported by the material, materialized and perceptual planes predominate, favoring the
child's familiarization with the initial systems of mathematical representation. In the 2nd year, there
is an expansion of the symbolic repertoire, with a greater presence of structured records, such as
decimal numbering system, place value, order table, tables, graphs, measurements, calendar,
monetary system and problems with greater linguistic complexity. However, the analysis shows
that the semiotic function appears predominantly as a functional means for the learning of
mathematical contents, and not as an object of intentional and conscious formation. It is concluded
that the collection favors initial conditions for the development of the sign-symbolic activity, but
does not fully systematize the formation of the semiotic function as a psychological instrument of
mathematical thought, which makes the teacher's mediation decisive to explain the relationship
between sign and object, guide the passage between representations and promote the conscious
appropriation of the symbolic systems of Mathematics.
