SUMMARY:
This thesis aims to analyze the practices and representations influenced by the Catholic Church
that have marked the school culture of the Escola Estadual Cônego Monte, located in the city
of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, between 2016 and 2024. Founded in the context of
the Natal Movement and historically linked to the Diocese of Natal, the institution is currently
part of the state public school network, preserving, however, different symbolic, spatial, and
cultural references associated with Catholicism. It is grounded in the assumptions of the New
Cultural History, mobilizing authors such as Roger Chartier (2002), Dominique Julia (2001),
Antonio Viñao Frago (1995), Frago and Escolano (2001), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), and
Michael Pollak (1992), taking practices, representations, school culture, school space, and
memory as its central categories. Methodologically, the investigation is anchored in the
historiographical operation proposed by Michel de Certeau (2007) and is characterized as
qualitative research, developed through the analysis of institutional documents, photographs,
field observations, and semi-structured interviews conducted with school managers, teachers,
and staff. The analyses show that Catholic influences remain inscribed in everyday school life
through memories, practices, spatial organization, religious symbols, and values associated with
Christian morals, producing permanencies that are updated in the context of the contemporary
public school. The study concludes that the Escola Estadual Cônego Monte constitutes a space
in which the public and the sacred intertwine in the constitution of a singular school culture,
marked by the coexistence of public education regulations and historical references linked to
the Catholic tradition.
