SUMMARY:

The reflection developed in this dissertation addresses the challenging task of “educating educators” through three educational initiatives implemented by Father José Comblin (1923–2011) in Northeastern Brazil during the second half of the twentieth century. Grounded in the principles of the SEE–JUDGE–ACT method, he became the architect of a popular pedagogy capable of establishing a dialogue between the teaching of Theology and the struggles of everyday life, with a view to fostering the critical thinking of seminarians, as well as female and male missionaries. The purpose of this embodied pedagogy was directed toward the communal construction of a politics of living guided by hope, fraternity, and solidarity, capable of transforming “limit-situations” into the “unprecedented feasibility.” Revisiting the project of this missionary educator requires expanding the disciplinary boundaries that shape the education of priests and laywomen and laymen, often constrained by academicism and finished formulas, in order to embrace shared learning subject to the unfinished nature arising from constant questioning and adjustments in accordance with the demands of praxis. The research was conducted through a bibliographic survey, consultation of documentary sources, interviews, and testimonies. The theoretical interlocutors of this study are Paulo Freire (1921–1997), for his dialectical defense of collective learning, and Edgar Morin (1921–2026), for his emphasis on the recognition of “self-eco-organization” in the formative journey of subjects. Revisiting the experiences of the “Theology of the Hoe” in the rugged regions of Pernambuco and Paraíba, as well as José Comblin’s participation in the process of establishing the Theology program at São Pedro Seminary in the Archdiocese of Natal, makes it possible to understand the “Project of Freedom” as that of an educator who fulfilled the task of educating other educators toward the horizon of a more egalitarian and just society.
