SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to unveil the social representations held by music faculty members—teaching in both Bachelor’s and Licentiate degree programs—at the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (EMUFRN) regarding what it means to be a music educator. Music education is a choice deeply rooted in affect, often originating in childhood; the relationships established during this time provide the foundation for the construction of one's identity as a teacher. Our research question asks: how are the social representations of "being a teacher" formed among EMUFRN music faculty, considering their educational backgrounds and pedagogical experiences? The study aims to analyze the formation of these social representations based on the faculty members' training processes and pedagogical experiences. This is a qualitative, basic research study that seeks to analyze academic training and interpersonal relationships in conjunction with the teachers' pedagogical experiences. To this end, an initial approach involved a profile questionnaire administered to 40 participating faculty members; subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight faculty members teaching in EMUFRN’sBachelor’s and Licentiate programs. Data analysis was grounded in Arruda’s (2014) "contextualization spiral." The results reveal three dimensions of the representations of being a music educator: the affective dimension, the pedagogical dimension, and the practical dimension. The thesis argues that the social representations held by EMUFRN music faculty are constructed through the integration of their pedagogical and musical practices—permeated by affect—which are shaped by their relationships with both teaching and their musical experiences, spanning the time before and after their entry into higher education music teaching
