SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to analyze the educational practices of sexuality in the printed
discourses of the newspaper Nós Por Exemplo, which circulated between 1991 and
1995, and the magazine Sui Generis, published between 1995 and 2000. These
publications, which comprised a homosexual press, in opposition to hegemonic media,
presented content focused on information and education about urban gay culture and the
advances in scientific medical knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS, without the prejudice
and discrimination produced by the conservative discourses present in the mainstream
media of the same period. The hypothesis defended is that the educational practices of
sexuality present in these periodicals experience tensions without necessarily breaking
with the proposed discursive regularity, even though they circulated in distinct and
subsequent temporal frameworks. These educational practices were part of counter-
discourses activated against the epidemic of misinformation and moral panic produced
by major newspapers and magazines, increasing and reinforcing prejudice against those
who disobeyed gender norms. This work engages with the concept of "discourse" from
Michel Foucault's perspective as a historical, collective, and power-based production
that organizes knowledge, determines truths, and subjugates individuals. It also engages
with the idea of "war machine" from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze and Félix
Guattari, which defines a nomadic and creative form of organization, a power of
deterritorialization that creates possibilities for life. The thesis also articulates the
concept of "body", both from Michel Foucault's perspective as an object of power and
knowledge relations, and from Judith Butler's perspective, which examines it through "gender performativity". The method used to develop this work is discourse analysis
from the perspective of Michel Foucault, and the sources used in the research were the
newspaper Nós Por Exemplo (1991-1995) and the magazine Sui Generis (1995-2000).
At the end of this research, I identified the production of counter-discourses that
stimulated readers to engage in educational practices of freedom as a way of
confronting and subordinating their bodies to the power structures that circulate through
their discourses in society.
