SUMMARY:

This study analyzes the trajectory of Jeremias Pinheiro da Câmara Filho in vocational education in Brazil, from the late 1930s to 1960, a period marked by the consolidation of technical-industrial education within the context of the national industrialization project. Situated in the field of the History of Education and in dialogue with studies on the History of Intellectuals, the research understands Jeremias Pinheiro Filho as a manager-intellectual whose performance was consolidated through networks of sociability and his circulation in different spaces of educational and political power. The theoretical framework is based on the contributions of Sirinelli (2003), with regard to intellectual trajectories and networks of sociability; Foucault (2014), for the analysis of practices of discipline, surveillance, and control present in the school institutions he directed; and Cunha (2000) and Fonseca (1986a; 1986b), which support the historical understanding of vocational education and industrial education in Brazil. From a methodological standpoint, the investigation is grounded in the evidentiary method, as proposed by Ginzburg (1989), privileging the analysis of traces and documentary clues. The collections mobilized include the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library (HDB), the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil (CPDOC), digital repositories, as well as the physical collections of the Escola Industrial de Natal and the Escola Técnica Nacional, using sources such as printed materials, correspondence, educational legislation, and bulletins of the Brazilian-American Commission for Industrial Education (CBAI). The results indicate that the trajectory of the manager-intellectual was marked by the centralization of authority, the valorization of disciplinary and surveillance practices, as well as by fostering closer relations between school and industry, revealing tensions, contradictions, and limits of the technical training project in the period, and contributing to the historiography of Brazilian vocational education by allowing the understanding, on a micro-historical scale, of broader processes that marked the consolidation of Technical-Industrial Education in the country.
