SUMMARY:

Having led strikes that shook the military dictatorship in the late 1970s, Lula founded a political party, participated in the Diretas Já campaign, and, as a frequent candidate in elections since the 1980s, brought the perspective of labor to politics, contributing significantly to the late Brazilian democracy, of which he is one of its founding fathers. Throughout this process, Lula explicitly states his views on democracy in various interviews and speeches given both before and during his presidency. Thus, the central objective of this research is to extract, through an immanent analysis of Lula's speeches delivered between 1980 and 2006, his idea of democracy, its social determinants, and its purpose. The analysis reveals that, in his discourse, democracy is a civil religion; its driving force originates in civil society; it is built by workers, in opposition to intellectuals and businesspeople; it initially aims at socialism, later replaced by an economic and social democracy that favors both the powerful and the powerless; and, above all, democracy transcends individuals, parties, and particularities. At the end of his first term, the agricultural production structure remained untouched, due to the prioritization of exports and the relegation of industry to a subordinate role. Thanks to strong international demand for commodities, the period saw mediocre economic growth, from which income transfer programs and continuous increases in the minimum wage were instituted. The social benefits guarantee re-election. Abandoning his socialist identity, Lula moved closer to the hallmarks of a green-and-yellow social democracy, seeking to regulate the relationship between capital and labor and produce minimal reforms for the benefit of workers. Agrarian reform did not happen. Unlike his time in the unions, the greatest labor leader in Brazilian history leaves, in subjective terms, a dubious legacy, guided by a political mentality that overvalues democracy, despite its impotence in the face of the autonomous movement of economic categories. Their political maneuvering results in reconciling desires with the nullifying reality of the authentic world of work and its potential. Through grotesque falsifications of the socialist tradition, intellectuals contributed by exorcising Marx and Lenin, worshipping Gramsci, and arranging a conservative democracy.
