SUMMARY:

This dissertation work seeks to analyze how the ideas of academic and activist Angela Yvonne Davis on penal abolitionism are addressed in Brazilian academic productions in the field of human sciences. The research starts from the hypothesis about the unsystematic or still scarce use of Davis in Brazilian academic literature on the subject, despite the growing global interest in Davis’s ideas. The study proposes to analyze the main ideas and concepts of Davis’s penal abolitionism, assessing how they are interpreted and applied in the Brazilian context and identifying possible contributions, gaps, and theoretical-analytical complementarities. The dissertation will be divided into three main chapters. The first chapter will focus on the central ideas and concepts of Davis’s penal abolitionism. The second chapter will analyze the main trends and debates in Brazilian academic productions on penal abolitionism and the presence of Angela Davis’s ideas. The third chapter will examine how Davis’s ideas are used in Brazilian academic discussions on abolitionism and how the author’s ideas could contribute to the development of abolitionist ideas in the Brazilian context. This study is relevant for its potential contribution to academic debate and for the design of public policies or reforms in the Brazilian criminal justice system. In addition, it is expected to inspire new questions and promote critical reflection on current penal justice practices in Brazil.
